Jury convicts ex-Ohio soldier in killing

AKRON (AP) — A former soldier from Ohio who took back guilty pleas in the killing of his estranged wife’s boyfriend has now been convicted by a jury.

Shaun Cleland, 28, of Medina County was found guilty this week of aggravated murder, murder and other charges in the 2005 strangulation death of David Heinricht.

A state appeals court last year allowed Cleland to withdraw guilty pleas which had resulted in a life sentence. The court said the judge who accepted the pleas didn’t adequately explain Cleland’s eligibility for parole on two lesser charges. A new trial was ordered.

Heinricht was found dead in his apartment in Brunswick in October 2005. Police said Cleland flew home from an Army assignment in Hawaii to confront Heinricht.
