Senior high school foot- ball standouts from the Mahoning Valley are getting their final chance to show what they can do on the field.
Area seniors have been invited to play in the 25th annual Jack Arvin All-Star Football Classic on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Warren’s Mollenkopf Stadium.
“It is a really a nice experience [for the players],” Campbell Memorial coach Jeff Bayuk said. “I don’t think I ever talked to a kid who didn’t enjoy this game.”
Bayuk is in his third year as director of the battle that will pit The Mahoning County All-Stars against the Trumbull County All-Stars.
“This is their last chance to play at this level,” Bayuk said. “Their teammates were opponents during the season and so they get to make friends with them, and some of them actually will be going to school together in college.”
Bayuk said preparing for and playing in the game, which is sponsored by the Mahoning Valley Coaches Association, gives players a chance to get ready for college practices.
“This helps the players get an early start,” Bayuk said. “They are allowed to play in two all-star games.
“So if they don’t play in the [Ohio-Pennsylvania] Big 33 [Game] or the [Ohio] North-South game, they still get a chance to play in an all-star game and get some recognition,” Bayuk said. “It’s a good honor and a great experience.”
Bayuk expects collegiate football scouts to be on hand, prospecting for some overlooked or undecided nugget.
“There always are college scouts there,” Bayuk said. “In fact, I remember a tight end from Hubbard probably had six to seven college coaches around him at the game because he wasn’t sure which college he was going to.
“So I know college coaches will be there because there are a number of guys that are undecided which college they are going to attend.”
Bayuk said the players are the best of the area crop and are good learners.
“Both coaching staffs [said] that they would like to have this team in the fall because they are all-star kids and pick up things really well,” Bayuk said.
Bayuk is hoping for a big crowd because the event is a fund-raiser for MVCA projects.
“We usually get between 700 and 1,000 spectators,” said Bayuk, noting that admission will be $6. “All proceeds from the game are used to host activities sponsored by the association, which include the Al Beach Basketball Classic, an annual football recruiting night as well as numerous scholarships for local students.”
The Mahoning All-Stars are coached by Tim McGlynn of Jackson-Milton, assisted by his own staff: Sam Gianfrancesco, Josh Barringer, Mike Lodyn, Mark McGlynn and Mike Murphy.
Brian Hoffman of Hubbard is coach of the Trumbull squad assisted by his own staff: Jon Mosora, Jason Diaz, Rick Resatar, Bobby Thompson and Frank Mazzocca.
“The teams have been practicing since late May at Jackson-Milton and Hubbard,” Bayuk said. “They are required to have eight or nine practices.”
