Pitts is Penguin representative

YOUNGSTOWN — Senior wide receiver Aaron Pitts represented YSU at the NCAA National Student-Athlete Development Conference held in Orlando, Fla., at the Walt Disney World Coronado Spring Resort on May 24-27.

Pitts was one of 233 student-athletes from the Div. I level to be selected and overall 700 attended the conference.

Last year Pitts saw action in all 11 games catching nine passes for 101 yards.

Grimes is winner

WAMPUM, Pa — Cale Grimes, 7, of Vienna swept both races at the BeaveRun Motorsports Complex race track on May 29.

Grimes won the heat race and the feature race.

He is a rookie and has appeared in four races.

Midwest meet

JACKSON, Mich. — Lakeview senior Ben Moody won the 110-meter hurdles and anchored the winning 4x100 relay to help lead the Ohio team to a runner-up finish at Saturday’s Midwest Meet of Champions.

Warren Harding senior Joey Threats was a member of that winning sprint relay and Crestview senior Jakob Leon took second in the high jump as Ohio scored 168 points, just 31‚Ñ2 points behind Michigan.

Indiana was third with 1331‚Ñ2.

Howland senior Nicole Pachol was third in the 300-hurdles and Jackson-Milton senior Samantha Hamilton anchored the second-place 4x800 relay.

St. George is a Cavalier

CANTON — Cardinal Mooney High School graduate Allison St. George will play tennis at Walsh Univ.

St. George was a four-time all-SVC player and was a state qualifier in doubles as a senior.

She had a four-year record of 79-16.

Pavlik autographs

YOUNGSTOWN — Middleweight boxing champion Kelly Pavlik will sign autographs during the Mahoning Valley Thunder’s game on June 19.

That night the Thunder play Manchester at the Covelli Centre, beginning at 7:05 p.m.

That night will also be Civil Service Night.

Admission tickets for the game will be $5 each.

Standohar is second

WILLOUGHBY — Evan Standohar of Girard shot 94 to take second place in the Boys 12-13 Division of the North Coast golf tournament.

Clay Holizna of Russell shot 81 for first place at the Lost Nation Golf Course.

In the Girls 12-15, Haylee Harford of Leavittsburg shot 81 for second place and Kelsie Teaberry of Warren was fifth with a 90.

In the Gleneagles Classic, Standohar shot 97 to take fourth place.

In the Boys 16-19, Austin Elder carded a 79 for fifth and Robert Reams was 10th with an 81.

Also, Poland’s Maria Mancini turned in an 85 for third place in Girls 12-15.

Fortunato cards 84

BROOKSIDE — Zachary Fortunato of Poland shot 84 to place 16th in the Boys 16-18 Division of the Northern Ohio PGA golf tournament.

In the Boys 13-15, Jake Fait of Boardman was seventh with an 80 and Justin Hallapy of Hubbard had an 89 for 12th.

In the Girls 16-18 Division, Jackie Evans of Youngstown had a 93 to take fourth while Amanda Orr and Alexis Rafoth of Canfield shot 99 and 100 respectively to place 6-7.

Calhoun collapses

HARTFORD, Conn. — UConn men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun has been hospitalized after he collapsed following a 50-mile charity bicycle ride during which he fell and broke five ribs.

Calhoun was taken to the UConn Health Center in Farmington on Saturday, where he was to be held overnight for observation and released today. A spokeswoman for the hospital said he was listed in good condition.

Calhoun fell 12 miles into the race in Simsbury. Moments after he crossed the finished line, he slumped over and fell to the ground.

Phipps Handicap

NEW YORK — Seattle Smooth extended her winning streak to five Saturday, beating Seventh Street by 11‚Ñ4 lengths in the $300,000 Ogden Phipps Handicap for fillies and mares at Belmont Park.

The 2-1 second choice, Seattle Smooth pulled off a mild upset over the three-horse entry of Seventh Street, Sea Chanter and Music Note, the 1-5 favorite.

With Ramon Dominguez aboard, Seattle Smooth split horses at the top of the stretch and rallied gamely past Seventh Street.

Franklin beats Silva

COLOGNE, Germany — Rich Franklin won a unanimous decision over Wanderlei Silva at UFC 99 on Saturday in the sport’s first show in its newest territory.

Franklin (27-4), a former UFC middleweight champion, rebounded from a split-decision loss to Dan Henderson in January. Silva (32-10-1), a former Pride titleholder and among MMA’s most exciting figthers for most of the past decade, lost for the fifth time in his last six fights.

The fight, contested at catchweight of 195 pounds, got off to a cautious start, with almost nothing happening in the first minute. Silva just missed with a head kick midway through the round. Then he caught Franklin’s kick and took him down by tripping the other leg.

Confed Cup soccer

IRENE, South Africa — Italy faces defensive problems for its Confederations Cup opener against the United States on Monday, with injured captain Fabio Cannavaro almost certainly out and replacement Nicola Legrottaglie also in doubt.

Alessandro Gamberini, an inexperienced defender, most likely will team with Giorgio Chiellini in central defense against the U.S. in Pretoria.

Cannavaro has a strained calf, and team physician Enrico Castellacci said Saturday the 34-year-old star probably will not play.

KOBE, Japan — Japan’s first female professional baseball player struggled with her control and took her first loss.

Eri Yoshida, a 17-year-old who throws a sidearm knuckleball, took the mound in the ninth inning with the score tied 2-2.
