Swish tryouts
YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Swish of the American Basketball Association will hold their first open tryout session on July 11 at the Mayor Ralph A. Infante Wellness Center in Niles, announced team owner David Stambul.
“The try-out will be split into three 2-hour sessions to ensure that every participant will receive fair and equal attention from the Swish coaches and staff,” said Stambul.
Stambul said that each candidate must pay a $100 pre-registration fee or $135 if registering at the door.

Ohio Red Bulls
CHARDON — The undefeated Ohio Red Bulls’ semi-pro football team will seek their third win tonight in their home opener against the undefeated Cleveland Saints at Canfield High Stadium at 7 p.m.
The Red Bulls hold first place in the Eastern Football Conference West Division of the United States Football Alliance with a 3-0 record, while the Saints are in second place at 2-0.

OSU recruit arrested
MIAMI — An Ohio State football recruit is facing a drug charge in Florida.
According to Miami-Dade Police, Jaamal Berry of Miami was arrested on a charge with possession of more than 28 grams of marijuana.
Police stopped the 18-year-old early Thursday for running a stoplight. An incident report states officers found a bag containing marijuana in the back seat.
According to the report, Berry told police he had bought the drugs an hour earlier and planned to smoke them with friends.
Berry was released from jail Thursday on $5,000 bond. His court hearing is July 2.
Akron’s Large takes hammer throw
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Stevi Large of Akron has won the women’s hammer throw at the NCAA track and field championships after the event was interrupted by a lengthy weather delay.
Large took the national title with a throw of 223 feet, 4 inches. Eva Orban of Southern California was second, and Sarah Stevens of Arizona State was third.
The area was hit by bad weather that became severe around noon, with rain, high winds, lightning and tornado concerns.
When the meet resumed around 3 p.m., the shot put areas had turned into small lakes.

ESPN gets Rose Bowl
BRISTOL, Conn. — The Rose Bowl will be televised on ESPN beginning in January 2011, giving the network broadcast rights to all Bowl Championship Series games.
ESPN announced the agreement the Rose Bowl on Friday.
The network had previously said it would air the Fiesta, Orange, Sugar and BCS national championship game as part of a multiyear agreement that also begins in January 2011.
The 2010 Rose Bowl and the 2010 BCS national title game from Pasadena, Calif., will remain on ABC. The Rose Bowl has had a separate media rights agreement from other BCS bowls.

NEW YORK — Commentator rolled to an easy win Friday, beating Stud Muffin by 7 lengths in the $64,950 Kashatreya Stakes at Belmont Park.
The 8-year-old gelding sprinted quickly to the front and led all the way in the race for New York breds. A winner of over $1.9 million, Commentator is unbeaten in six races against state breds.

Jones eyes US team
FRANKFURT — Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones has told the governing body of German soccer that he wants to play for the U.S. national team.
Jones has dual German and U.S. citizenship and has played three exhibitions for Germany. According to new FIFA regulations, Jones can switch national teams since he never played in a tournament game for Germany, the Deutscher Fussball Bund said Friday.
