hSedgwick: We didn’t lose everything to Madoff

LOS ANGELES — Kyra Sedgwick and her actor-husband, Kevin Bacon, managed to stay out of the gossip pages until they were among the many victims of the massive Ponzi scheme run by financier Bernard Madoff.

“I think the interesting thing about it was that I always thought, ‘We’re so boring. We should be in the tabloids more. C’mon honey, let’s have a scandal,’” the 43-year-old actress said.

“Well, it wasn’t the truth that we were destroyed,” Sedgwick said in a recent conference call from New York. “And I think when you say ‘no comment,’ that’s, of course, where they’re going to go, because it’s fun and it grabs headlines and people will be more interested.”

“It’s been really unpleasant and makes you feel really vulnerable. But the fact of the matter is that we did not lose everything,” she said. “We lost hard-earned money that we worked very hard for that was what we thought in a safe place. It’s painful but a lot of people lost a lot more. And we have a lot of things to be grateful for in our life, and we never ever forget that.”

‘Slumdog’ makers buy home for child star

MUMBAI, India — The makers of the hit movie “Slumdog Millionaire” have bought a new home for one of the two child stars discovered in Mumbai’s slums.

The purchase of a 250-square-foot one-bedroom apartment for the family of Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 10, was completed Monday, said Nirja Mattoo, who helps oversee a trust set up by the filmmakers to help Azharuddin and his 9-year-old co-star Rubina Ali.

“They can move in,” Mattoo told The Associated Press on Wednesday, adding that the trust plans to deliver the keys today.

Both children lost their homes last month when authorities demolished parts of their slum.

Mattoo said the trust is actively looking for a new home for Rubina.

Ownership of the first apartment, which cost about $50,000 will be transferred from the trust to Azharuddin when he turns 18, provided he completes school, Mattoo said.

Lauryn Hill cancels tour, citing health

STOCKHOLM — Festival organizers say hip-hop and R&B singer Lauryn Hill has canceled all tour dates in Europe this summer for health reasons.

Stockholm Jazz Festival spokeswoman Liisa Tolonen says the artist’s agent informed the festival late Tuesday that all performances in Europe by the former Fugees singer have been canceled. This includes shows in Sweden, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, and Austria.
