BOARDMAN — In preparation for their inaugural United States Hockey League season, the Youngstown Phantoms will open their main tryout camp today at the Ice Zone.

The five-day camp begins at 10 a.m. today and continues through Sunday.

Players will also tour the Covelli Centre at 9 a.m. Thursday. The tour will include tryouts, as well as draft picks and offseason acquisitions.

The Youngstown Phantoms will replace the Mahoning Valley Phantoms, who played in the North American Hockey League and will likely relocate out of the area.

The 14-team USHL is the top junior hockey league in the country.

The Phantoms will play all 30 regular season home games this season at the downtown arena.

The team has a contract with the city for five years with various provisions that could end the deal after four years if the team’s annual attendance is below 60,000, an average of 2,000 a game.

The Phantoms recently selected 10 players from existing USHL clubs in the league’s expansion draft and five more in the league’s Futures Draft, which is for prospects born in 1993.
