Report: Lambert talks about sex, drugs, ‘Idol’
NEW YORK — “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert has landed on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, where he talks about sex, drugs and his “Idol” experiences.
The 27-year-old singer from San Diego acknowledges in an interview that he’s gay and says it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.
Says Lambert: “I’m proud of my sexuality. I embrace it. It’s just another part of me.”
Lambert says he was inspired to audition for the Fox network singing competition after having a “psychedelic experience” at the Burning Man festival in Nevada.
Lambert says he knew “American Idol” was his “only shot to be taken seriously in the recording industry, because it’s fast and broad.”
Webby Award winners say all in 5 words
NEW YORK — Who needs Twitter’s 140 characters? Five words were enough for the winners at the 13th annual Webby Awards ceremony, where Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter, took the prize for breakout of the year.
Sticking to the Webbys’ tradition of acceptance speeches limited to just five words, he said: “Creativity is a renewable resource.”
Also at Monday’s ceremony, “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane was honored for his Web series “Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy.” Said MacFarlane: “What is this for again?”
Arianna Huffington, whose Huffington Post won for best political blog, said: “I didn’t kill newspapers, OK?”
Jimmy Fallon, cited for using the Internet to flog his taking over NBC’s “Late Night,” said: “Thank God Conan got promoted.”
Angler-author fined for illegal fishing
ISLE AU HAUT, Maine — Maine fisherman and author Linda Greenlaw, who survived the nor’easter that was the basis for the book and movie “The Perfect Storm,” has been fined more than $30,000 for fishing illegally in Canadian waters.
Greenlaw wasn’t required to attend Tuesday’s sentencing in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Canadian government also seized her swordfish catch.
The 48-year-old Greenlaw says she was on the deck of her 63-foot vessel in September attempting to retrieve fishing gear that had been dragged by another boat when she strayed into Canadian waters.
She says she knew she was near Canada’s coast but didn’t realize she had breached the 200-mile limit.
Greenlaw was the last person in contact with the Andrea Gail, a swordfish boat out of Gloucester, Mass., that sank with all hands during the 1991 storm.
Jazzy Jeff storms off stage during performance
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hip-hop performer DJ Jazzy Jeff stormed off the stage during a weekend performance in Kansas City, saying venue managers did not like the type of music he was playing.
Officials with the Power & Light District say they just wanted the production crew to turn down the music because it was too loud for the sound system.
“His management was instructed on four occasions to turn the music down,” said Power & Light District president Jon Stephens. “The system was maxed out, and it would have damaged the equipment.”
In Twitter entries, Jazzy Jeff said the staff at the KC Live! pavilion stopped his show after about half an hour Saturday night “for playin’ hip-hop.”
The performer, whose real name is Jeff Townes, won a Grammy in 1988 with partner Will “Fresh Prince” Smith for the hit “Parents Just Don’t Understand.”
He also had a recurring role as Smith’s best friend on the 1990s sitcom, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”
Concertgoers said Jazzy Jeff was playing hip-hop and pop songs before abruptly ending his set. Then rapper Skillz, who was serving as Jazzy Jeff’s hype man, yelled out, “They won’t let us play hip-hop, y’all.”
