Suspect’s collapse puts police on TB alert

STRUTHERS — A traffic stop resulted in two police officers’ and two firefighters’ having to be on the alert for symptoms of tuberculosis.

Police had a suspect with a suspended driver’s license at the Struthers police station Monday night when the man collapsed in an interrogation room and began coughing up mucus and what appeared to be blood, a report says.

The fire department responded, and an ambulance was called. The man later told ambulance personnel that he is a TB carrier, the report said.

The ambulance company notified the police department.

The two officers who were exposed had tests at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, said Struthers police Capt. Tom Skovira. They were told to watch for symptoms such as coughing within the next six weeks, he said.

Skovira, who was there during the episode, said he consulted with a doctor and was told that being exposed to someone with tuberculosis for such a short amount of time is not likely to result in contracting the illness.

A fire department spokesman said the two firefighters contacted their family doctors, who told them to be on the watch for symptoms.

Man in woman’s swimsuit charged with menacing

BELLBROOK — A man accused of harassing females while dressed in a one-piece woman’s swimsuit has pleaded not guilty.

Kevin L. Miller, 41, of Sugarcreek Township, entered the plea Tuesday before Xenia Municipal Court Judge Michael Murry. Bond is $10,000.

Sugarcreek Township police Sgt. Mark White says Miller was wearing a woman’s swimsuit when police arrested him on his property Monday night. He has been charged with menacing and public indecency, both misdemeanors.

Xenia Prosecutor Ron Lewis says Miller once swam into the Little Miami River chasing two women who were canoeing, and once chased two juveniles who had visited an ice cream shop.

Lewis says Miller also partially exposed himself while wearing the swimsuit.

Man accused of DUI in police parking lot

ENOLA — Police say a man was arrested for driving under the influence and possession of drug paraphernalia in a police station’s parking lot.

East Pennsboro Police Chief Dennis McMaster says the 37-year-old Mechanicsburg man caught the attention of an officer by speeding through the parking lot Sunday night. McMaster says the officer saw the man park between two marked police cars, turn off his headlights, recline his seat and close his eyes.

McMaster says the officer approached the car to check on the man and saw an empty bottle of vodka on the floor. The man was later found to have a 0.112 blood- alcohol level.

Police say the officer also found a pipe with traces of marijuana.
