WARREN — The Trumbull County Family & Children First Council is presenting “Understanding Autism, A Follow-Up Conversation” as this month’s Parent Power workshop on June 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the YWCA, 375 N. Park Ave.
The workshop includes breakout sessions with the panelists, one of whom is a parent of a child with autism. Panelists are: Dr. Giovanna Vinci-Khoury, Dr. David Chiarella, and representatives of Potential Development, the Rich Center and the Trumbull County Educational Service Center.
Child care is not available. A light meal will be provided, but participants must register by calling (330) 399-3412.
Volunteer training
BOARDMAN — HandsOn Volunteer Network of the Valley is offering a free orientation and training session for all community partners Thursday at 9 a.m. at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Retirement Services, 301 W. Western Reserve Road, Poland, and July 15 at 9 a.m. at Northside Medical Center’s Medical Education Building, Classroom C.

The training will cover the recent transition from Volunteer Services Agency to HandsOn Volunteer Network of the Valley, conducting a needs-assessment within volunteer programs, and creating sustainable, high-impact opportunities for community engagement.
All 501(c) 3 nonprofit agencies, governmental organizations, educational institutions, proprietary health-care organizations and initiatives interested in volunteer mobilization are invited to attend.
Team leaders sought
BOARDMAN — HandsOn Volunteer Network of the Valley is seeking team leaders to work coordinate and provide support to high school students who will be completing projects under the auspices of HandsOn’s inaugural Youth Volunteer Corps.
There will be five projects this summer at various locations in the community, most from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, with Habitat for Humanity, Easter Seals, the Salvation Army, Mill Creek Park and other organizations. To learn more about becoming a team leader, call (330) 782-5877.

Autism conference
MAYFIELD HEIGHTS — Milestones Autism Organization is having its seventh annual Autism/Asperger’s conference, titled “Promoting Life Long Strategies for Success in: School, Home, Community and Work,” from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. June 15 at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven.
The keynote speaker is Brenda Smith Myles, Ph.D., who will discuss her recent book “Understanding the Hidden Curriculum: The Unwritten Rules in Social Situations.”
The conference is for parents, students, professionals and adults with autism.
Volunteers needed
BOARDMAN — Akron Children’s Hospital Beeghly Campus is seeking volunteers to staff its gift shop, assist in medical records with data entry, and to work at the registration/information desk.
