Formeck cards 71; qualifies for Publinks

GREENSBURG, Pa. — YSU freshman golfer Samantha Formeck has earned a spot in the Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship.

Formeck shot a one-under-par 71 to place first in a Publinks qualifier at Totterridge Golf Club in Greensburg, Pa.

She won the event by four strokes, making six birdies throughout her round.

Formeck will golf June 22-27 at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass.

Since the final days of April, Formeck has taken home medalist honors at the 2009 Horizon League Championships, was named the Horizon League Golfer and Newcomer of the Year.

Livas to officiate in Junior World event

CANTON — Area football official Julius Livas is one of 31 officials from 14 countries and four continents that will work the International Federation of American Football Junior World Championship.

Games will be played at Fawcett Stadium on June 27-July 5.

Livas is one of eight officials who were selected from United States.

Scrappers program

NILES — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers and the New York-Penn League are participating in a scholarship program this season that will award three $2,500 grants.

The scholarships are based on financial need, academic performance and other criteria.

Harpp is honored

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Slippery Rock Univ. track runner Jenn Harpp has earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honor.

Harpp, a distance runner, was selected to the first team.

Harpp, a junior, has a 3.90 cumulative GPA as an exercise science major.

COLUMBIANA — The Crestview Renegades (2-0) will play against the Cuyahoga County Spartans in a Grassroots Football League game tonight at Crestview High School at 7 p.m.

HARTFORD — The Sharon Speedway will have Monster Truck Mania tonight in addition to the Modifieds, E-Mods, Pro-Stocks and Limited Sprints.

In addition, Mercer County and Ashtabula County residents will receive discounted admission at the “County Night” promotion.

Berman to present

CANTON — The group of the presenters for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2009 enshrinees has been completed.

Ralph Wilson, Jr., the founder and owner of the Buffalo Bills, announced that he has selected long-time friend and ESPN personality Chris Berman as his presenter for enshrinement.

Other presenters for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of ’09 were previously announced.

The enshrinement ceremony takes place at Pro Football Hall of Fame Field at Fawcett Stadium on Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 7 p.m.

Browns sign Foster

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns signed offensive lineman George Foster on Friday and waived rookie safety Jason Venson.

Foster is a six-year NFL veteran who spent the previous two years with the Detroit Lions. He appeared in 19 games, starting 12 of them.

The 6-foot-5, 338-pound Foster was a two-year starter at Georgia. He was drafted in the first round in 2003 by Denver.
