Vegetarian cooking class is being offered free
BOARDMAN — A free vegetarian cooking class, sponsored by the Evergreen Seventh-day Adventist Church, will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 14 in the social hall at 7668 Glenwood Ave., next to the public library.

Summer program planned at Patchwork Center
YOUNGSTOWN — North Star Patchwork Training Center, an auxiliary ministry of the Friends House Chapel Church, 192 Haseltine Ave., will sponsor a summer activity program for middle schoolers through adults.
Registration will be from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 18 at the center. There is no charge for the program, which will take place from June 24 to Sept. 4, in sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday each week.
The program includes sewing, quilting, crafts, computers, music and nutrition to help develop self-reliance, self-sufficiency and economic empowerment.

Golf outing to benefit American Cancer Society
WARREN — “Swing For a Cure” golf outing, which will benefit the American Cancer Society, will take place June 19 at the Old Avalon Golf Course.
Registration will be from 9:30-10:30 a.m., and play will begin at 11 with a shotgun start. Included in the $70 fee are 18 holes in a four-person best ball scramble format, unlimited beverages, catered lunch at the turn, catered dinner at about 5 p.m., pins and skins, and multiple contests.
Dinner-only tickets are $30 and include unlimited beverages until 8 p.m. and entertainment.

St. Anthony of Padua to be celebrated
YOUNGSTOWN — The celebration of St. Anthony of Padua will take place June 13 at St. Anthony Church,, 1125 Turin Ave.
Mass will be at 4 p.m. with a procession on the church grounds. Principal celebrant will be the Most Rev. Bishop George V. Murry, S.J. Concelebrants will be the pastor, Monsignor John H. DeMarinis, and priests in attentance.
A variety of Italian food will be available after the Mass, and music will be provided by John Gabriele.
Miss Italian Youngstown contestants are sought
YOUNGSTOWN — The 2009 Greater Youngstown Italian Festival is accepting applications for the 2009 Miss Italian Youngstown Pageant.
The pageant will take place July 31. It helps to kick off the festival, which will be along Federal Plaza downtown from July 31 to Aug. 2.
The pageant is scheduled from 7-8:30 p.m. on the main stage, on Federal, in front of the former Phar-Mor building.
Any young woman between ages 16 and 23 can enter if she has Italian as part of her heritage.

Road Riders support Relay for Life
AUSTINTOWN — The Gold Wing Road Riders Association, Chapter M, met May 23 at the Yankee Kitchen in Boardman.
Roy Jones, chapter director, announced the chapter raised $1,800 for Relay for Life by sponsoring a rigatoni dinner in April.
Those attending the meeting donated funds for the Scleroderma Foundation to honor a member, Pat Daniels. Plans were made to ride to Fremont to retrieve the Region D Traveling Plaque.
Geocaching event
Mahoning Cultural Collaborative is inviting those with an awareness of both the community and environment to take part in geocaching, a modern-day treasure hunt for those equipped with GPS devices.

Rose show planned at Eastwood Mall
WARREN — The Warren Rose Society will have its annual rose show June 20 at the Eastwood Mall in Niles. The community is invited to participate. There is no cost for showing roses in the competition. Judging will begin at 9:30 a.m. Participants should take their roses in water to the center concourse of the mall. Blooms will be judged by American Rose Society accredited judges.
