Flag flap

CANTON — Following complaints from veterans, a banner with the U.S. flag beneath a Canadian one has been taken down at the stadium that hosts the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game.

Banners for an upcoming international football competition at Fawcett Stadium in Canton showed the flags of the eight participating nations in the order in which they’re seeded. The first banner in the series had No. 1 seed Canada above the U.S., the No. 2 seed.

Veterans and other critics objected, saying it was insulting and a breach of protocol to display a Canadian flag on top of the American flag.

Madison Sq. Garden renovations scheduled

NEW YORK — Madison Square Garden’s renovation will cost more and take longer than originally planned.

The owners of the nation’s busiest sports arena say the entire project will cost more than $500 million, and the complete renovation will be finished by the start of the 2012-13 NBA and NHL seasons. Officials had hoped to have the renovation to all levels done a year earlier.

Officials unveiled new drawings and mock-ups of luxury suites for the 41-year-old arena. The arena would include a 5,000-square-foot “supersuite” to entertain up to 300 people.
