FC Dallas wins 3-0

CHICAGO — Jeff Cunningham and Kenny Cooper scored and FC Dallas handed the Chicago Fire their first loss of the season with a 3-0 victory on Sunday.

The Eastern Conference-leading Fire’s franchise-record unbeaten streak ended at 11.

The Fire (5-1-6) were trying to match the league-record 12-game streak set by Los Angeles in 1996 and matched by Kansas City in 2000. However, Chicago had trouble against Dallas (2-6-3), which entered the match with the fewest points in the league.

Cunningham’s goal in the 15th minute was enough to end the Fire’s run while giving Dallas a 1-0 lead.

Ex-NFL players lash out at union

LAS VEGAS — Retired football players angry with the NFL Players Association over disability and pension benefits said Sunday that the executive director of the union may be ahead of himself in seeking their support during upcoming contract talks with the league.

The informal group of former football players lashed out at comments made by NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith, who said Saturday that if there is a lockout by owners in 2011, retired player benefits would be reduced by 80 percent while it lasts.

Several players meeting in Las Vegas about their problems with the union said their benefits are protected by law — lockout or not.

Belmont Stakes week

The owners of Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird stopped by the gelding’s barn at Churchill Downs for a quick visit before heading to New York for Belmont Stakes week.

Mark Allen and Dr. Leonard Blach also met with trainer Chip Woolley a day before Mine That Bird’s final workout in preparation for Saturday’s 11‚Ñ2-mile Belmont.

“It looks like he has put on a little weight,” Allen said Sunday after seeing Mine That Bird for the first time since the gelding ran second in the Preakness Stakes on May 16. “For as hard as he has run and the shipping, I am real happy with the way he looks.”

ROME — Lance Armstrong concluded a relatively quiet Giro d’Italia in 12th place overall Sunday, then jetted home to await the birth of his fourth child.

The seven-time Tour de France winner eased off in the race’s final stage, an individual time trial run through the ancient streets of Rome on uneven cobblestones made even more slippery by rain.
