Man accused in killing of recruiter had lived in Ohio

COLUMBUS (AP) — A man charged with killing an Army recruiter in Arkansas previously lived in Ohio and renewed his state driver’s license as recently as February, records show.

Abdulhakim Muhammad is scheduled to be arraigned today on capital murder and attempted capital murder in the June 1 death of Pvt. William Andrew Long and the wounding of another soldier outside a military recruiting station in Little Rock, Ark.

Muhammad, 24, lived with a roommate in a low-rent apartment complex on the northeast side of Columbus sometime before 2007, according to the complex’s records.

He was listed as a previous resident when Bray Co. took over management of the complex in February 2007, said property manager Inez Leyba. She couldn’t say specifically when Muhammad lived there.

The former management company, Oakwood Management, didn’t immediately return a message seeking information about Muhammad.

Several residents of the apartment complex — which is popular among immigrants from Mexico and Somalia — said they had moved in recently and didn’t know Muhammad.

State records obtained by The Associated Press show that Ohio issued Muhammad a driver’s license April 30, 2007. The license was suspended in December 2007 after he failed to pay a traffic ticket issued by police in Tennessee. It was reinstated last February after Muhammad paid the Tennessee ticket.

Muhammad cleared up his Ohio license problems just days after Yemen deported him to the United States. Yemeni police arrested Muhammad on Nov. 14 for overstaying his visa.

The FBI would not comment on Muhammad’s ties to Ohio.
