Special to The Vindicator COLLECTIBLES: A collection of buttons fascinates Dean and Betty Brown of Poland as they get a sneak preview of exhibits to be displayed during Heritage Day on Sunday at the Ward-Thomas Museum in Niles.

NILES — Heritage Day at the Ward-Thomas Museum, 503 Brown St., on Sunday will feature exhibits of interest to people of all ages. The 14 rooms are filled with antiques and artifacts and gowns from the First Ladies Gown collection will be displayed throughout the museum.

Helen DeMalio will demonstrate the art of tatting in the solarium and June Karovic will show her quilting techniques in the kitchen area, where samples of her work will be displayed.

Barbara James, a member of national and state button collection organizations, will be on hand to answer questions relating to the history of buttons, and she will exhibit buttons she has been collecting for more then eight years, many found at garage sales. Of special interest are her vegetable-ivory buttons made from the nut of the South American palm tree. Her framed collection of these buttons won third prize at a state button collection competition in Dayton.

A display of his wood collection will be exhibited by George John, a member of the International Wood Collectors Society. He has more than 300 pieces in his collection, with samples of wood from all over the world, including some rare pieces.

Dave Cover of Fowler will display his very old kitchen items, and Hugh Mullins will show cavalry items from the Civil War.

Throughout the day, Marian Mihas of Warren will play the harp in the library.

Lunch and lemon shakes will be available and there will be a sale of homemade baked items. Lawn croquet will be set up on the side yard and “Little Joe” will play his honky-tonk piano in the gazebo.

Guests visiting the museum from noon to 5 p.m. on Heritage Day will have an opportunity to stroll the beautifully manicured grounds and view the flower gardens.
