Gov. Strickland opens the 156th Ohio State Fair

COLUMBUS (AP) — Gov. Ted Strickland has opened the 156th annual Ohio State Fair, calling it an affordable way for families to enjoy a “staycation.”

Strickland opened the fair Wednesday in a sheltered location at the fairgrounds in Columbus because a steady rain prevented the traditional opening at the entrance.

Organizers believe the struggling economy could mean another year for big attendance at the fair. Last year’s event broke a record for Saturday attendance, and ticket sales were up 11 percent from 2007.

The fair has made discount coupons available on its Web site and has several special deals.

This year’s traditional butter sculpture at the fair depicts three generations of dairy farmers caring for a cow and a calf.
