AUSTINTOWN — At the July 20 meeting of the Rotary Club of Austintown, President Brian Laraway introduced Detective Sgt Jeffrey Toth of the Austintown Police Department, who told Rotary members of the new program by the department to collect outdated over-the-counter and prescription drugs for proper disposal.

This is Officer Toth’s 22nd year with the department, the last 10 in the D.A.R.E. program in schools.

Last spring Detective Sgt. Jeff Solic, in conjunction with Chief Paul Gavalier, enlisted Toth’s aid to help with the drug disposal program. Drugs that are thrown into our water system or tossed out are a danger to children and animals and are very hard to get rid of in water treatment plants.

The last Wednesday of every month from noon to 3 p.m., Toth will collect and sort drugs to be incinerated. They can be dropped off at the police station on Ohltown Road in Austintown.

Those dropping off drugs can be anonymous if they prefer and don’t have to get out of the car. Needles and syringes are not included. The program will continue until further notice.
