Scrappers pick up 3-0 win in Batavia

BATAVIA, NY — Mahoning Valley took advantage of two Batavia errors and Brett Brach pitched seven shutout innings as the Scrappers defeated the Muckdogs, 3-0, in a rare day game on Tuesday.

Brach struck out five as the seven innings represented a career high. He improved to 2-1 and lowered his ERA to 2.79.

Cory Burns worked the final two innings to record his fourth save.

The Scrappers scored their first run of the game in the second inning when Chun Chen reached on a throwing error and then scored on Jason Smit’s RBI single to right field.

In the top of the ninth, the Scrappers added two more runs when Kyle Smith singled to center, then Kyle Bellows followed with a double to left. Chen then reached base again on a fielding error that allowed both runs to score.

Batavia starter Michael Blazek (3-5, 3.00) suffered the loss, going five innings with three hits, one unearned run and six strikeouts.

Scott Schneider followed throwing the next three innings with four strikeouts. Joe Kelly came in in the ninth.

The two pitching staffs combined for 17 strikeouts and no walks. Scrappers first baseman Ben Carlson struck out all four times he batted.

Bellows and Smit had two hits apiece for the Scrappers.

Mahoning Valley moves on to Auburn to face the Doubledays for two games. Tonight the Scrappers are scheduled to send Preston Guilmet to the mound. He is 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA.
