New traffic signals
BOARDMAN — Beginning at 5 a.m. today, various intersections on U.S. Route 224 between West and Tiffany boulevards will be maintained by flaggers while traffic signals are replaced through 4 p.m. Friday.
This work is part of a $5.2 million project to widen Route 224 through the addition of right-turn lanes from Boardman Park Drive to just west of South Avenue.
The project also includes improvements to 15 traffic signals from Parkside Drive to Tiffany.
The project is scheduled to be complete by late October.
Food-bank distributions
YOUNGSTOWN — Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley will distribute more than 110,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables this week at these locations: 1 p.m. Thursday at Beulah Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave.; 1 p.m. Friday at Mahoning Methodist Church, 2214 Mahoning Ave.; 8 a.m. Saturday at Big Reach Center of Hope, 11767 Lisbon Road, Greenford; and 11 a.m. Saturday at Southern Community Center, 45 E. Main Street, Salineville.
The produce is made available through the Agricultural Clearance Program.
Man dies in accident
FARMDALE — A 28-year-old man died in an accident in woods behind his home on Corinth Court Road, about two miles south of Farmdale and two miles north of state Route 88 in Johnston Township.
The Trumbull County Sheriff’s Department said Allen D. Stewart, of 7283 Corinth Court, was about a half-mile behind his house, hauling a large log chained to a tractor when the tractor flipped backward on him at about 11 a.m. Monday He was badly burned, and he was dead at the scene.
Stewart’s father, David L. Stewart, who lives next door, found the tractor, which was on fire, on top of his son. A police report said he went home and got a backhoe and lifted the tractor off of his son while his wife, Kelly Stewart, pulled her son free.
Shooting investigated
GREENVILLE, Pa. — A man is in custody in a shooting early Tuesday on North Second Street.
Neither the name of the victim nor the person accused, who was in custody in Emporium, Pa., was released.
Police said the alleged shooter was trying to set a car on fire to get the victim out of the house. When the man emerged, he was shot in the chest.
The victim was taken to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh.
Fatal car crash probed
HUBBARD — The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate a one-car crash that killed a 23-year-old woman.
Ashley Phillips, of Hubbard, was driving west on U.S. Route 62 just before 8 p.m. Monday when the vehicle went off the right side of the road. Police said her 1999 Kia Sephia overturned and hit two trees.
Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said she wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
Hunting-license deadline
COLUMBUS — Hunters are reminded that time is running out to apply for licenses for controlled hunts this fall. The Friday deadline is approaching, and hunters will not be allowed to participate in several controlled deer and waterfowl hunts after the season.
The application for the hunts can be found online at www.wildohio.com, or by calling (800) 945-3543.
Hunts are $3 per hunt when applying online or $5 per hunt when applying via mail.
Controlled hunts will take place at many state parks, including a deer and waterfowl hunt at Mosquito Lake State Park in Trumbull County.
