Akron announces 21 city layoffs, more to come

AKRON (AP) — The Akron mayor has announced the layoff of 21 temporary and part-time city employees to trim a budget deficit. More jobs cuts are ahead.

Mayor Don Plusquellic says the layoffs announced today are the first in Akron in 27 years. They involve seasonal, temporary and part-time workers in the recreation, engineering, public utilities and tax departments.

The mayor says future layoffs will be announced in stages, but no numbers were mentioned. The mayor is trying to close a $12 million budget deficit caused in part by declining tax collections.
