Rockford Village event

YOUNGSTOWN — The Center for Community Empowerment at 1420 Dogwood Lane, working to meet the needs of residents in the Rockford Village area, is celebrating its 10th anniversary along with a reunion of those who lived in the Kimmel Brook Homes subsidized housing community on the city’s East Side.

The community underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation in the late 1990s and was renamed Rockford Village in 2002.

The event begins at 11 a.m. Friday with community day with food, children’s activities, and the beginning of a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. The tournament ends Saturday, and later in the evening, there will be a dinner-dance at the center. The event ends Sunday with an 11 a.m. outside worship service.

The Rev. Willie Peterson, center director and founder, is looking for the names of people who grew up in Kimmel Brook who have become successful in their careers, with one selected as a keynote speaker at the dinner-dance. He can be contacted at revwpete@aol.com or by calling the center at (330) 740-1982.

Gun found at restaurant

LIBERTY — The manager at Wendy’s restaurant, 4001 Belmont Ave., called police and told them a customer had found a gun in the women’s restroom.

What the police found when they responded at about 1:30 p.m. Friday was a loaded .22-caliber handgun.

Cruiser tire slashed

YOUNGSTOWN — An 18-year-old city man is in the Mahoning County jail on $45,000 bond after police say he slashed the tire on a cruiser in front of several officers.

Police were investigating gunshots in the 500 block of Ferndale Avenue when one officer noticed Jonathan King, 18, of Darbyshire Drive, Canfield, in front of a cruiser kneeling down. Officers say they then heard a loud bang.

Reports say King ran off but was caught a short distance away. He is charged with vandalism, disrupting services and resisting arrest.

Reports say King told officers he was fearful other people on the street would beat him up if he did not slash the tire.

Home invasion probed

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are looking for two armed men who stormed the home of a 59-year-old woman who uses a wheelchair.

The Richland Avenue woman told police two men, one of whom she knows, came into her home at 3 p.m. Sunday through a front door. She said they brandished handguns and demanded firearms and drugs.

The woman told police one of the men touched her breast and made her get out of her wheelchair and lie on the ground.

The two men took a purse containing personal papers and jewelry before running out of the house.

NEOUCOM upgrades

COLUMBUS — The state Controlling Board released nearly $200,000 Monday for two improvement projects at the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy.

The panel approved $119,900 for the second phase of a building restoration at the Rootstown campus. The work involves fixing cracking and crumbling mortar to prevent water leaks and improving the appearance of the building.

An additional $74,570 will be used for storm-sewer upgrades. Several academic buildings flood during heavy rainfalls; the funds released Monday will be used to install additional basins and larger drainage piping.
