Trial under way for man accused of shooting death at youth football game

YOUNGSTOWN — The South Side man accused of shooting a man to death in front of dozens of children at a little league football game is set to go to trial.

Anthony M. Caulton, 27, of East Auburndale Avenue appeared today before Visiting Judge Thomas Curran in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to begin his trial. Caulton is charged with murder in shooting death of Larry D. Jones, 31, of Ravenwood Avenue in 2006.

Caulton is represented by Atty Lynn Maro. Prosecutors handling the case are Dawn Cantalamessa and Mark Hockensmith.

The court spent the entire day questioning potential jurors for the trial. Judge Curran asked the prospective jurors how many remembered the 2006 shooting. More than two-thirds of those in the room acknowledged remembering the incident.

Caulton is accused in the fatal shooting of Jones in front of hundreds of people at a youth football game. Police said Caulton, also known as Anthony Pfeifer, is suspected of shooting Jones at the former South High School football stadium behind Eagle Heights Academy. The crowd attending the game was estimated at between 500 and 800 people.
