Torch Club member garners 2 awards
YOUNGSTOWN — Professor Charles W. Darling, a member of Youngstown Torch Club, received double honors during the 78th annual convention of the International Association of Torch Clubs June 25-28 in Appleton, Wis.
Darling received the Silver Torch Award for his many years of service to the Youngstown club and was the recipient of the prestigious Paxton Award, which recognizes the best paper presented at a Torch Club during the year. He read his paper on “The Origins of American Involvement in Vietnam” during a banquet at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel and Convention Center in Appleton.
Darling, professor emeritus of American History, taught at Youngstown State University before retiring in 1995. He is the author of two science-fiction books and two compilations of folk music, and is the host of Folk Festival broadcast on WYSU-FM.
