2nd sales-tax hearing

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County commissioners will conduct a second public hearing on the proposed renewal of the county’s half-percent sales tax that expires at the end of 2010.

The hearing will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the county courthouse basement. The focus of the hearing will be on proposals to renew the tax for five years, 10 years or on a continuous basis.

No one from the public attended a similar hearing last week.

Park trustees meeting

BOARDMAN — The Mill Creek Memorial Park Association board of trustees will have its annual meeting at 2 p.m. Thursday in Forest Lawn Memorial Park chapel.

All lot owners and family members are invited to attend. Also invited are those interested in becoming members of the new Friends of Forest Lawn program.

Work has begun on many upgrading projects. The goal is to bring Forest Lawn back to its original grandeur, association members said.

Struthers gas project

STRUTHERS — The city’s public-utility committee has set a meeting for 6:45 p.m. Monday to discuss the city’s methane-gas-conversion project.

The meeting will be at the city building in the council caucus room. A special meeting will follow at 7 p.m. in council chambers.

Buhl Day honorees

HERMITAGE, Pa. — The Buhl Day Committee has announced the names of the 30th annual Buhl Day’s honored guests.

They are Jennifer Barborak of Sharon, Robert C. Jazwinski of Hermitage and the Rev. Donald P. Wilson of Waynesburg, Pa., formerly of West Middlesex.

Honored guests are lauded each year for contributions to the community. This year’s Buhl Day is Sept. 7 at Buhl Park.

Dog-license canvass

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Deputy dog wardens will canvass door-to-door in Lawrence County on Wednesday, county Treasurer Richard Rapone announced.

The six wardens will issue citations to owners of unlicensed dogs and dogs who are not current on rabies immunizations.

Dog licenses can be purchased at the treasurer’s office in the Lawrence County Government Center, 430 Court St.; Critter Corner, 1001 Wilmington Ave.; Pet Parlor, 4466 Mitchell Road; and Lawrence County Humane Society, Pearson-Mill Road.

Costs are $6 for a spayed or neutered dog and $8 for others.

Farm, flea market

FOWLER — Bockelman’s Garden Center and Trumbull County Farm Bureau are looking to start a farm and flea market at the garden center, 2869 Youngstown-Kingsville Road (state Route 169), the second and fourth Thursday, Friday and Saturday in August, September and October.
