Landfill closing far ahead of schedule

GREEN — A long-running landfill in southern Mahoning County is slated for closure by month’s end.

The County Land Development Landfill on West South Range Road, operated by Republic Services, formerly Allied Waste and Browning-Ferris Industries, used to be a municipal solid-waste landfill.

It stopped operating in that capacity in the late 1980s. It’s adjacent to the Lewis landfill, which was operated by the same company for municipal solid waste, and closed in the early 1990s.
