McDonald council accepts bid for upgrad of sports courts

staff report

McDONALD — Village council has accepted an initial $452,000 bid to demolish several tennis and basketball courts and replace them with new ones.

During a special meeting this week, officials hired R.T. Vernal Paving Inc. of North Lima to replace three tennis courts and two basketball courts in Woodland Park with four tennis courts, four basketball courts and two volleyball courts in the park, said Village Administrator Thomas Domitrovich,

An 80-foot green space will be between the tennis and basketball courts, which will, in part, absorb storm- water runoff and protect the courts, he explained.

In addition, R.T. Vernal accepted a change order from officials that would allow the village to also take part in the construction, thereby reducing the cost McDonald will pay to roughly $350,000, Domitrovich noted.

The village hopes to have the order signed by R.T. Vernal early next week and work under way shortly thereafter, he said, adding that general-fund dollars the village has saved for about two years will go toward the project.

Domitrovich thanked the Trumbull Soil and Water Conservation District for its help and added that Mayor Glenn W. Holmes is seeking donations for the work.
