ST. LOUIS — The Missouri Valley Football Conference will celebrate its 25th season of Football Championship Subdivision competition this season.

As part of the celebration, the league is paying tribute to its all-time great players including some from YSU.

Among the players are those considered “institutional greats” - players from current schools while those schools were not part of the league.

Tim Johnson, a YSU linebacker recorded 114 tackles with the Penguins and later played with the Raiders and Ravens.

Quarterbacks Ron Jaworski and Cliff Stoudt played for several NFL teams.

Also, placekickers Jeff Wilkens and Paul McFadden competed at YSU and in the NFL.

Bus trip

YOUNGSTOWN – Pan Atlas Travel is offering same-day round-trip bus transportation for the Youngstown State football game at Pittsburgh on Sept. 5. The cost of the motorcoach ride is $35 and does not include a game ticket. Scrappers postponed

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ game against the State College Spikes on Thursday was postponed due to rain.

The teams will play two seven-inning games tonight starting at 5:35.

Mahoning Valley returns home for a two-game series against Williamsports starting Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Eastwood Field.

Olbrych wins

POLAND — Mark Olbrych of Boardman fired a round of 68 to win the boys’ 18-year-old division and highlight play in the Independent Insurance Agents of Mahoning County Junior Golf Tourament held Monday at The Lakes Club.

Other boys age-group winners were Ryan Cowin, age 17, with a 72; Stephan Sofocleous, 16, 74; Sean McMahon, 15, 80; David Shoffstall, 14, 87; Jason McQuown and Dante Petrus, age 13, tied with nine-hole 47s; and Brian Terlesky, 10, nine-hole 37.

Girls winners were Chase Connors, 17, 79; Lauren Martauz, 16, 92; and Christina Cooper, 12, nine-hole 53.

New leaders at Mar-Hill

BOARDMAN — Peggy Rouzzo and Mark Makatura took over the lead heading into the final weekend of the Mar-Hill Mixed Doubles tournament at Boardman Lanes.

Samantha Gigax and Ron Jones had held the lead since the opening day. Current standings can be seen at www.marhill.vpweb.com.

Clark attends Elite 11 camp

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State senior Daryll Clark, an Ursuline High graduate, has spent this week at the prestigious Elite 11 Quarterback Camp.

Clark, the 2008 first team All-Big Ten quarterback, is among seven collegiate/professional counselors at the camp, which is being held at Soka University in Aliso Viejo, Calif.

A 2009 co-captain, Clark said he “was a close second” in a passing accuracy competition among the counselors.

Joining Clark as counselors are Chase Daniel (Missouri/Washington Redskins), Cody Hawkins (Colorado), Colt McCoy (Texas), Zac Robinson (Oklahoma State), Mark Sanchez (USC/New York Jets) and Juice Williams (Illinois).

Cavs’ top pick heads to Spain

CLEVELAND — Christian Eyenga, a raw shooting guard drafted in the first round by the Cleveland Cavaliers, will stay with his Spanish club rather than play with LeBron James next season.

The 20-year-old Eyenga thanked Cleveland for drafting him with the 30th overall pick, but said Thursday he doesn’t feel ready for the NBA. The 6-foot-5 Eyenga chose to sign a three-year contract extension with DKV Joventut. Terms of the deal were not available.
