Victim’s family against clemency for Jason Getsy
CLEVELAND (AP) — Prosecutors and relatives of a slain Ohio woman are pressing Gov. Ted Strickland to reject a rare recommendation from advisers that he spare the life of a death row inmate.
Jason Getsy, the 33-year-old killer for hire, is scheduled to be executed Aug. 18 for the death of 68-year-old Ann Serafino in Hubbard Township. His defense and death penalty opponents say the mastermind behind the 1995 murder in the township escaped the death penalty, so triggerman Getsy should too.
A petition drive against clemency began Monday, and the first batch of hundreds of signatures goes to the governor’s office today. His staff says Strickland will take as much time as needed to consider the issue.
The victim’s daughter says clemency would undermine justice.
