Ohio couple accused of threatening sheriff

WILMINGTON, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio couple is accused of trying to extort money from a county sheriff.

Clinton County Sheriff Ralph Fizer Jr. says he received a certified letter last week signed by 30-year-old Jennifer Gaines of Wilmington in which she threatened to release damaging information to the media.

Prosecutors say they later met with Gaines and her husband, 52-year-old William Gaines, and that the couple reiterated their demands, with Jennifer Gaines requesting $40,000.

The were arrested Thursday and charged with attempted extortion, a third-degree felony charge. Both were released after posting $25,000 bond.

State investigators say they have found no wrongdoing by the sheriff.
