Suburban unemployment climbing faster than urban unemployment

This recession is hitting suburban residents harder than previous ones, a new study said.

The Brookings Institution report shows that suburban unemployment in most metropolitan areas, including Youngstown, is growing faster than unemployment in urban areas.

The report, called “The Landscape of a Recession,” also questions whether public officials in areas such as the Mahoning Valley are aware of the need to reach out to hurting suburban residents.

“It’s important to make sure these services are accessible in outlying communities,” said Elizabeth Kneebone, senior research analyst with the Washington, D.C.-based Brookings.
