Salem Storybook Museum plans home and garden tour


SALEM — Salem Storybook Museum is sponsoring “A Burchfield Summer” home and garden tour as its major fundraising endeavor of the year .

Visitors will have an opportunity to tour a variety of impressive sites from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 6, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 7, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 8.

Headlining the tour is the estate of Bob and Linda Sebo at 1790 Quaker Lane. Situated on 10 acres, the custom-designed stone mansion has a commanding view of the gazebo, boccie court and golf driving range. In addition to lush lawns and tree-lined driveways, there are clipped boxwood mazes, carefully maintained flower beds, fountains and sculptures.

A special map will be available to visitors, and the Sebos will provide refreshments on the west terrace of their home.

Also open for visitors will be the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Mastrangelo at 1371 Highland Ave., and of Mr. and Mrs. John T. DaBelko at 1720 Pearce Circle. Another stopping place will be the Charles Burchfield home, now the Charles Burchfield Homestead Museum on Fourth Street, where the curator, Janis Yereb, will conduct tours.

Among the gardens on the tour itinerary are those at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Schwartz, 1888 E. 11th St.; Connie Sanor and Jim Solmen, 110 Homewood Place; Dr. and Mrs. Richard Fawcett, 402 Highland Ave.; and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Conn, 344 Highland Ave. Visitors may also tour the garden at the Salem Historical Museum, 206 S. Broadway.

The official starting point for the tour will be the plaza at the Kent City Center on North Lincoln Avenue, where tour maps will be available and guests can deposit ticket stubs for door prizes.

Tickets will be $12 on tour days. Tickets purchased in advance are $10, and are available at the Chamber of Commerce, Kolby’s, and McLaughlin’s Salon of Hair in Salem. Members of Salem High School National Honor Society, Key Club, Interact and those in George Spack’s history of government classes, volunteering to work as tour guides or greeters, will receive credit for community service hours. Boy and Girl Scouts, church groups and organizations are also encouraged to sign up to help with the event.
