Judge dismisses NRA suit over Pittsburgh gun law

PITTSBURGH (AP) — An Allegheny County judge has dismissed the National Rifle Association’s suit over a recent Pittsburgh law that requires gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms.

Judge R. Stanton Wettick Jr. of common pleas court ruled today the NRA and gun owners lacked standing to sue the city because they haven’t been affected by the law. He said that a court may intervene only where there’s actual harm.

Earlier this month, Wettick described the law as so vague as to be useless and doubted it would ever be enforced.

The law provides for a $500 fine for not reporting a gun stolen within 24 hours.

The Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence praised Wettick’s decision.
