Rondinelli rolls, advances to semis


STRUTHERS — Rondinelli Tuxedo broke open a close contest by scoring four times in the sixth inning, and added five more runs in the seventh to knock out Troy American Legion 12-2 in the fifth round of the Connie Mack state tournament Sunday at Cene Park.

Rondinelli then drew a bye in the sixth round to advance to the semifinal contest against the Ohio Hurricanes on Cene 1 at 6 p.m. today. The winner will play the Lake Erie Bulldogs for the state championship at 8 p.m. Lake Erie drew the bye into the championship game

Drew Fitzpatrick tossed a complete game, allowing just six hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.

Jason Bagoly led the attack with three hits, including a double and four runs batted in. Ed Reese had a single and a triple while Phil Lipari scored three times. Tyler Wright had two hits for Troy.

Tri-State Collegiate League Yo. Metros 2-3, Allegheny 0-1

YOUNGSTOWN — Alex Oles tossed a two-hitter with five strikeouts and four walks to lead Youngstown in the first game.

Cory Johnson had three hits and an RBI for Metros, while Armani Johnson and Matt Pitzulo each scored runs, giving them a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

In the second game, Dom Silvestri tossed a six-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks to lead Youngstown, which scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to snap a 1-1 tie.

Dave Leon singled and doubled and Silvestri singled and scored two runs for Metros.

Babe Ruth (14s)

Sean Coyne, Ian Simmons, and Jake Stauffer combined to pitch a one-hit shutout as the Youngstown All-Stars bested the Cambridge All-Stars 12-0 in the first game of the 14 -year-old Division I Ohio Babe Ruth tournament.

Jacob Froats led Youngstown with three hits, including a two-run home run and a double. Drew Delsignore added three hits.

Ryan Strollo, Christopher Maze, and Michael Raschilla doubled in the winning effort. Youngstown plays Newark in the second round.

Little League Baseball 9-10s

BOARDMAN — Poland defeated Boardman East 15-0 in a four-inning game to capture the district title at the Fields of Dreams. The Bulldogs advance to the Cambridge regional beginning Aug. 1.

Softball 11-12 girls

IRONTON — The Poland little league girls team lost to Bucyrus 4-3 on Sunday.

Aleah Hughes pitched all six innings, and gave up one earned run. Claire Testa and Abby Masluk each had hits.

Poland plays East Hamilton at 11 a.m. today.
