Prostate-cancer program

YOUNGSTOWN — “Early Detection of Prostate Cancer: Best Chance for Survival” is the title of the free program from 6 to 8 p.m. July 27 at Beulah Temple Church, 523 Griffith St.

Award for local eye doctor

BOARDMAN — The Ohio Amblyope Registry of amblyopic children and their families has awarded Dr. Randall Maceyko with a Top 10 Referring Optometrist Award.

The Top 10 list represents eye doctors who refer the most amblyopic patients to the OAR for information, patches and case- management services, which are free of charge. Established as part of the Ohio Department of Health’s Save Our Sight Fund, the OAR receives funds from a donation box on Ohio license plate renewal forms.

Free spine scans offered

Magee achievement award

PITTSBURGH — Magee Women’s Hospital of UPMC received a first-place achievement award from the Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania in patient safety for achievements in researching and improving the process for elective induction of a woman’s labor.

Dr. Dennis English, vice president of medical affairs at Magee, and a team of obstetricians and nurses led the initiative. The HAP awards program recognizes top health-care providers that have developed innovative, adaptable projects that enhance patient satisfaction and improve health-care quality, and that produce cost savings and other efficiencies.

Dr. English and his team also received one of last year’s Fine Awards sponsored by The Fine Foundation and the Jewish Healthcare Foundation. The team won the first place Gold Award for its work in “Labor Induction Process Improvement.”

UPMC campus open house

GREENVILLE, Pa. — To celebrate the opening of its newly-renovated Ambulatory Services Department at the Greenville campus, UPMC Horizon will have a public open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday.

Refreshments will be served, and staff will be available to give tours of the department.

The refurbished department is the result of the completion of the most recent phase of the hospital’s $6 million surgical services construction project, which was launched in May 2007.

Also completed during this phase were enhanced outpatient registration and reception areas and improvements to the Center for Wound Treatment reception area, respiratory services, support services areas and the east entrance of the hospital.

The entire surgery project is expected to be done by the year’s end.
