Track’s Aaron Merrill receives honors

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown State senior thrower Aaron Merrill (Leetonia) has been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association men’s 2009 Division I All-Academic Track and Field team. A record 327 student-athletes representing 107 Division I institutions made up the men’s 2009 All-Academic team.

The USTFCCCA honors Division I individuals for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.

The student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.

Richards heads WoO field at speedway

HARTFORD — Rising short-track superstar Josh Richards will lead a talent laden field of dirt late model drivers into Sharon Speedway on July 25 for the running of the WFMJ-TV ‘Buckeye Bash’ World of Outlaws (WoO) contest

The Sharon event, which will be highlighted by a 50-lap feature attraction paying $10,000 to win, will mark the third leg of the WoO Alltel Ohio Late Model Speedweek.

Mooney names girls soccer coach

YOUNGSTOWN — Mooney High has named Cary LeMasters interim head coach for the varsity girls soccer team.

LeMasters has been an assistant coach for two seasons and previously was an assistant boys coach at East Liverpool High and East Liverpool Christian School.

Sports medicine program is July 29

LIBERTY — A sports medicine first aid and training program is set July 29 at Liberty High. Registration will be from 4:15-4:45 p.m. and the seminar will be from 4:45-9 p.m.

Fowler is second

MENTOR — Ryan Fowler of Warren shot an 83 to finish second for boys ages 12-13 in a Junior Golf Tournament at Blackbrook Country Club. Evan Standohar of Girard tied for third.

For girls ages 16-19, Angela Molaskey of Poland shot a 77 to finish third.

Special Olympics has golf event

CHAMPION — An Area 11 Special Olympics golf tournament is set today at 4;30 p.m. at Northwood Golf Course.

Approximately 50 golfers from Columbiana County MR/DD, Mahoning Public, Youngstown Developmental Center and Trumbull county Fairhaven Special Olympics will compete.

The tournament is a qualifier for the Ohio Special Olympics State Tournament that will be in Cincinnati on Sept. 15-16.

Standohar wins golf tournament

YOUNGSTOWN — Evan Standohar of Girard won the 13-14-year-old 7-up Junior Golf Tournament at Mill Creek Golf Course.

Standohar posted scores of 80 on the North Course and 77 on the South Course to finish 16 strokes ahead. he will be an eighth grader at Girard Junior High and has won a North Coast Junior Golf Tour event.

Notre Dame, Army to play in Bronx

NEW YORK — Notre Dame and Army will play the first football game at the new Yankee Stadium next year, rekindling a tradition that took off after Knute Rockne’s “Win one for the Gipper” speech more than 80 years ago.

The teams will meet in 2010, across the street from where they played more than 20 times.

Army is expected to play more games at the $1.5 billion baseball stadium.
