Ryan secures more federal funds

YOUNGSTOWN — Congressman Tim Ryan has secured more than $2 million in federal funds for Mahoning Valley health and education programs in a bill that passed the House of Representatives Friday.

If approved by the Senate and signed into law by President Obama, the money will fund the following programs:

- $900,000 for a social emotional learning program in eight Valley schools.

- $200,000 for a social emotional learning program at Youngstown State University.

- $200,000 to renovate an anatomy teaching laboratory at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy.

- $100,000 for the Inspiring Minds After School Program in Warren.

- $305,000 for the Youngstown Grey to Green Initiative.

- $200,000 for the Mahoning Valley Tradeswomen Training, Outreach, Opportunity, Leadership and Support program.

- $250,000 for the Summa Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities Solutions.

- $145,000 for the Youngstown Program in Arts and Career Education for Young Inner City Pupils.

- $100,000 for the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way Success by 6 Initiative.

“Rebuilding our economy isn’t just about making sure the jobs are here, it’s about making sure we are healthy, ready to compete, and our kids are up to the challenges that face them in the future,” Ryan, of Niles, D-17th, said in a news release.

“These programs will help educate our children, give them safe and challenging after-school programs, increase the level of health and wellness for our community and put people back to work.”
