Youngstown 13-year-olds win state title; qualify for regional


SPRINGFIELD — Jake Pishotti fired a two-hitter as Youngstown won the 13-year-old Ohio Babe Ruth state championship by defeating Mt. Vernon, 12-1. Pishotti also had two hits and three RBIs.

Phil Di Ianni’s three hits included a double and drove in four runs. Edmond Pilolli’s two hits included a triple as he drove in two runs. Tyler Spain hit a two-run triple while Mike Kindinis and Kurt Kuszmaul doubled.

Youngstown advances to the regional tournament that will be in Indiana and will play Eastern Kentucky in the first game on July 31 at noon.

YOUNGSTOWN — Rick Gozur had two hits and two RBIs to lead Roth Brothers over Youngstown Metros, 5-4, in a Class AA game at Oakland Field.

Mike Sikorski and Tom Clayton also had two hits for Roth. Sikorksi hit a triple and Clayton had a double, while Rob Tamburro hit a solo home run.

John Hay pitched an eight-inning complete game, allowing eight hits and four earned runs. He struck out eight.

Armani Johnson led Metros with two home runs and three RBIs. Eric Pirtz added a solo homer and Dave Leon singled twice.

Tamburro scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth when he was hit by a pitch with one out, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on Gozur’s single.

Hay retired Metros in order, striking out two, in the bottom of the inning.
