Wharmby Sports, Rondinelli’s rally for opening-day wins

STRUTHERS — David Saluga’s one-out triple in the bottom of the sixth inning drove home the tying and go ahead runs as Wharmby Sports defeated JL Clevelanders 4-3 in the opening round of the Connie Mack state baseball tournament on Thursday at Cene Park.

Josh Foster tossed the first five innings with Dom DeFelice adding two innings in relief for the win with three strikeouts.

Rondinelli Tuxedo 8, Thunder Select 0

A pair of four-run innings lifted Rondinelli Tuxedo.

Phil Lipari and Jason Bagoly drove home three runs each with Lipari having a double and a single to back up the three hit pitching of DJ Simoncic, who went the distance and had four strikeouts.

MAF Gators 3, 1080 Media 2

Vince Bartlone’s RBI single in the top of the seventh inning drove home the go-ahead run as MAF Gators defeated 1080 Media.

Norm Getzlaff had a pair of hits for the winners while Vince Frate tossed a complete-game five-hitter for the win with six strikeouts.

Chris Morgan also allowed just five hits and had nine strikeouts in going the distance in defeat. Dan Popio had tied the game at 2-2 with a two-out two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Northern Ohio 10, OTN Performance 2

Northern Ohio took advantage of five errors by OTN Performance to score six unearned runs.

Andrew Kubuski had two hits and drove home three runs, while Taylere Baker and Andrew Busser added two hits each for the winners.

Mike Konya tossed 21‚Ñ3 innings of scoreless relief for the win.

Jay Rowland had a pair of hits for OTN, while Robert Franks had seven strikeouts in 32‚Ñ3 innings of work, allowing eight runs (two earned).

Fielder’s Choice 5, Dave Sugar Excavating 2

Nick Venditti tossed a complete game with six strikeouts for Fielder’s Choice, which scored three times in the first and added two more runs in the second while getting 11 hits, all singles.

Chase Westphall had three hits, and Matt Jayjack two for the winners.

Nick Crum had a pair of singles for Dave Sugar while Marlo Cleckley struck out seven in four innings and suffered the loss.

Boys of Summer 3, Astro Falcons 2

Trailing 3-1 in the top of the seventh inning, Astro had the bases loaded with no outs but were only able to score one run.

Dustin Burns tossed a six-hit complete game with two strikeouts for the win while Jake Delucca had two hits for the winners.

Shane Wagner had a triple and a single for Astro, while Kolin Stanley went five innings on the mound and took the loss. He allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts.

Ryan Rovnak singled to start the seventh, then Matt Corner reached on a hit batter. Kyle Allen then bunted safely to load the bases before Trent Vallinger grounded into a double play which scored Rovnak. After Sutton Whiting was hit by a pitch Jared Turocy flied out to end the game.
