Tire recycling scheduled for Mahoning residents

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County residents wanting to recycle unwanted tires can do so from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St.

The first 10 passenger tires are free to recycle under this program sponsored by the Youngstown Litter Control and Recycling Division. Additional tires are $1.50 each. Commercial-vehicle tires won’t be accepted.

The program is open to county residents only.

Scholarship fundraiser set for Struthers High

STRUTHERS — The Boundless for Brandon Organization, which honors the memory of a Struthers High School graduate who died last year, will have a scholarship benefit Saturday.

The benefit begins at the Struthers High School Fieldhouse at 10 a.m. and continues until 5 p.m.

The money raised will go toward a scholarship for a high school graduate. The event will also raise awareness about self-injury, suicide and drug and alcohol abuse. Brandon Trevis was 21 when he took his life Oct. 14.

The event will feature an informational program, booths and information for counseling, face-painting for children, a bounce-a-round, dunking booth, Chinese auction with more than 60 items, a silent auction, a 50-50 raffle and refreshments.

The event costs $20 per adult, $10 per student, or $40 per family. Children under 5 get in free.

There also is a fund set up at the Struthers Federal Credit Union for people who wish to contribute.

Part of Pa. Turnpike to close for 6 hours

NEW STANTON, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Turnpike says an eight-mile stretch of the road will be closed in both directions for six hours this weekend.

The closing will be between the Irwin (Exit 67) and New Stanton (Exit 75) interchanges while crews set concrete beams for an overhead bridge.

Beginning at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, eastbound motorists will be detoured off the road at Irwin and take Route 30 East to Toll Road 66 South to New Stanton and can re-enter the turnpike at Irwin. Westbound drivers will exit at New Stanton, take Route 119 North to Toll 66 North to Route 30 West (Exit 6) and can re-enter the turnpike at Irwin.

Marker dedication set

FOWLER — A dedication ceremony to unveil the Ohio Historical Marker designating Fowler Township/Fowler Historical District will be at 2 p.m. July 26 at the gazebo on the township square.

Fowler was originally called Westfield because Samuel Fowler, who in 1798 purchased the land that became the township from the Connecticut Land Company for $12,903.23, lived in Westfield, Mass. In 1817 Samuel Fowler gave five acres at Fowler Center for a park or “common” with the provision that no permanent building be built on it.

After the dedication, the Fowler Township Historical Society will host a reception and tours of the Butts House. The event is free and open to the public.

Trunk-n-Treasure Sale

YOUNGSTOWN —Thirty vendors will sell items from the trunks of their cars at the Canine Crusaders Trunk-n-Treasure Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Croatian Home, 3200 Vestal Road.

Merchandise for sale will include typical garage-sale items, homemade dog treats and collars, cleaning products and jewelry. Howling Hound Karaoke will provide music.

The event also will feature a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, concession stand and a prize wheel featuring baked goods. Dogs in need of a home will greet shoppers.

Canine Crusaders is a Youngstown-based dog rescue. Over the last two years, Canine Crusaders has rescued more than 500 dogs from being euthanized. Paulina and Neal McCallum founded the non-profit organization in 2007.

‘Oz’ at Boardman Park

BOARDMAN — Movie Night in the Park continues Saturday in Boardman Park with “The Wizard of Oz.” It will start about 9 p.m. The event is free. Attendees should bring blankets or lawn chairs.
