Society to honor author

KINISMAN —The Kinsman Historical Society will honor the “Dean of Science Fiction” this weekend as it celebrates the life of Edmond Hamilton, an area native who wrote more than 300 works.

The program will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Market Square Book Den with “Meet Edmond Hamilton,” where Don Sutton, the events organizer, will portray the author. The event will move at 7 p.m. to the Kinsman Presbyterian Church for various activities, including a walk to Hamilton’s grave site.

Sutton also will present a slide collection from Hamilton and his wife, which was recently discovered in the couple’s old home in Kinsman.

Hamilton began writing science fiction in the 1920s and is the writer of the Captain Future series. Sutton said Hamilton’s influence on science fiction is evident throughout the genre.

Gas station owner robbed

YOUNGSTOWN — The 54-year-old owner of an East Side gasoline station and convenience store told police two masked gunmen emerged from the woods and robbed him as he was walking from the store to his car about 12:20 a.m. Thursday. The victim said he told the men, believed to be about 18 years old, that he didn’t have any money, but one of the robbers demanded his wallet. The victim turned over his wallet with $50 and credit cards to the robbers before they fled on foot into the woods. The robbery occurred outside the Speed Check, 1904 Oak St. Police immediately searched the area but were unable to find any suspects.

Christmas in July

SALEM — The Dairy King, 1164 E. Pidgeon Road, is joining The Humane Society of Columbiana County in celebrating Christmas in July to raise funds for the society.

The discount starts Saturday during the society’s Trash and Treasure Sale and continues through July 31. The Dairy King will offer a 50-cent discount on any ice cream product with the purchase of a hot dog. All proceeds will go to the Lazarus Fund for the care of abused and neglected dogs. The fund was created to support abused dogs and to symbolize the mission of the humane society.

The Dairy King offers a variety of hard, soft and sugar-free ice cream flavors and yogurts. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 10 p.m. Sunday.

The society’s Christmas in July Trash and Treasure Sale begins at 9 a.m. Saturday next to the Dairy King.

Man pleads innocent

WARREN — A 38-year-old city man pleaded innocent in Warren Municipal Court to aggravated robbery in the robbery of Arby’s restaurant at 1001 W. Market St. here. Police arrested Tyrone M. Dowell of Ohio Avenue on Wednesday a short distance away from the restaurant.

Dowell is in Trumbull County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond.

Contracts awarded

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County Commissioners have unanimously awarded $1,043,677 worth of contracts for installation of a grit removal and screening system at the sanitary engineer’s Meander Wastewater Treatment Plant on state Route 46 in Mineral Ridge to four local companies.

On Thursday, they awarded the $703,378 general contract to A.P. O’Horo Co. of Liberty; the $110,000 heating, ventilating and air conditioning contract to York-Mahoning Mechanical Contractors Inc. of Youngstown; the $5,299 plumbing contract to Alcon Mechanical Inc. of McDonald; and the $225,000 electrical contract to Penn-Ohio Electrical Co. of Brookfield.

The 12- to 14-month project involves installation of equipment to remove sand, grit and debris from wastewater as it enters the treatment plant.
