BOARDMAN — Boardman schools approved more than $4 million in contracts this week for renovations and additions to two of its elementary schools.

The school board approved spending of $4.21 million on the contracts and about $75,000 on boilers for Robinwood Lane and Stadium Drive elementary schools, according to the board agenda.

Construction will begin in four to six weeks on the renovations that will add classrooms and replace trailers that have held the overflow of students at the two schools since the 1960s, Superintendent Frank Lazzeri said.

The district plans to pay for the construction with a 30-year, $6 million loan, which is also funding a $481,000 athletic complex on Glenwood Avenue. It will repay the loan with the majority of its permanent improvement levy, which generates about $900,000 a year.

Last month, Jim Massey, the district’s director of operations, said state inspectors told the district in 2003 that it needed to replace five of its seven buildings.

Three years ago, however, voters rejected a $51.5 million bond issue to build a bigger sports complex and football stadium and upgrade all of the district’s schools.

Additions should be completed by the start of the 2010-11 school year, Lazzeri said, adding that they will address safety concerns raised by parents worried about intruders and the structural quality of the trailers.
