Pittsburgh building $12 million riverfront park

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pittsburgh has broken ground on a $12 million riverfront park, part of the three rivers ongoing transformation from industrial usage to recreational.

The site where the “urban playground” is being built formerly housed one of the city’s largest steel mills. During the past 30 years, this south shore area has been slowly transformed from an industrial site that spewed black steam into a trendy, outdoor mall-like area with pricey stores and popular restaurants.

The South Shore Riverfront Park will include a boat dock for recreational vessels and access to the $400 million SouthSide Works development. The park will be completed in 2012.
