Ben Carlson helps power Scrappers past Muckdogs

BATAVIA, N.Y. — Ben Carlson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and his first homer of the season to help power the Mahoning Valley Scrappers past the Batavia Muckdogs 9-6 in a New York-Penn League game on Sunday.

Kyle Smith added two hits, including his first triple of the season, an RBI and scored two runs for Mahoning Valley, which took a 7-3 lead after four innings.

Greg Folgia also had two hits, including a double, and scored a run. Eight different Scrappers contributed hits and five of their 11 hits went for extra bases. Mahoning Valley has won eight of its last 10 games to take a three-game lead in the Pinckney Division standings.

Preston Guilmet (2-2) started and went five innings, giving up three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk to get the victory. Austin Adams pitched three innings of relief, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks.

Tyler Sturdevant closed it out in the ninth, giving up one unearned run on two hits. Michael Blazek (2-3) started for Batavia and surrendered seven runs (five earned) on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
