‘Alzheimer Project’ starts July 27

GIRARD — The Greater East Ohio Area Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is offering the “Alzheimer Project,” a four-part documentary series that looks at the effects of this debilitating and fatal disease on those with Alzheimer’s and on their families, beginning at 1 p.m. July 27 at the Girard Multi-generational Center.

The series will be followed by an educational presentation “Opportunities for Communication” by Liz Mulroy, program director of the Greater East Ohio Area Alzheimer’s Association.

The first of the four documentaries is “The Memory Loss Tapes,” on July 27. Other documentaries are: “Momentum In Science,” Aug. 24 and Sept. 28; “Grandpa, Do You Know Who I Am?” with Maria Shriver and “Caregivers,” both on Oct. 26.

Headache program set

AKRON — Registration is open for a group treatment program developed by Akron Children’s Hospital’s NeuroDevelopmental Center for children and teens who suffer from headaches. The treatment groups meet for five, 90-minute sessions from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Akron Children’s.

The session for teens 13 and older meets Mondays, beginning Monday. The session for children ages 8 to 12 meets Tuesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m., beginning Tuesday.

Wellness education offered

YOUNGSTOWN — Meridian Services, in conjunction with Optimal Health, is offering corporate wellness education sessions for area businesses, and is also seeking businesses interested in hosting or attending the workshops. The first session attracted some 30 representatives from area businesses.

Ellie Platt, Meridian’s director of development and marketing, said Meridian offers health-risk assessments and biometric screening, while Optimal Health handles one-on-one Wellness Education and Health Coaching.

Grant funds study of birth outcomes

YOUNGSTOWN — The Humility of Mary Health Partners (HMHP) Regional Tobacco Treatment Center and St. Joseph New Start Treatment Center have received a $23,419 grant through the March of Dimes Foundation for a project aimed at improving birth outcomes in underserved populations.

The money will be used to increase access to services addressing high-risk behaviors, specifically smoking, other tobacco use, alcohol use and/or other drug use. The target audience is high-risk/underserved pregnant women.

Licensed chemical dependency counselors and certified tobacco- treatment specialists will provide services, said Terri Grimmett, manager of the HMHP treatment centers, which will partner with high-risk prenatal clinics, physicians and clinics serving under served populations.

$61,000 to centers

COLUMBUS — Two area Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services agencies are among 27 funded for capital projects by the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services. They are: Meridian Services Donofrio Women’s Center, $10,000; and the Columbiana County Mental Health Clinic, $51,208

Local funds award money to Second Harvest

YOUNGSTOWN — SJK Charitable Fund and Kennedy Family Foundation, component funds of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, have awarded Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley $9,352 for capital improvements to improve efficiency of food distribution.

The SJK Fund provided $5,352 to purchase pallet jacks for the warehouse and $4,000 was granted through the Kennedy Foundation for other capital improvements, including a Booster Pump System to increase water pressure throughout the facility and a Pedestrian Door in the re-pack area of the warehouse.

YOUNGSTOWN — Dr. Ronald J. Ruscitti, chiropractic physician at the King Health Center, is offering a presentation, “Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds,” at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane.
