5-run third inning defeats Scrappers

BATAVIA, N.Y. — Five consecutive hits in the third inning led to five runs that were just enough for the Batavia Muckdogs on Saturday against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

Starter Brett Brach allowed three consecutive singles by D’Marcus Ingram, Devin Goodwin and Alan Ahmady in the Muckdogs’ 5-4 victory in Class A New York-Penn League action.

They were followed by doubles by Xavier Scruggs and Ryde Rodriguez that put the Muckdogs ahead, 4-0. Beau Riportella’s two-out single scored Rodriguez for Batavia’s fifth run.

Designated hitter Jason Smit led the Scrappers’ offense with three hits including a RBI double in the seventh inning that reduced the Muckdogs’ lead to 5-4.

Tim Palincsar doubled and scored the Scrappers’ first run on Jordan Henry’s third-inning single.

Smit singled home Lurvin Basabe in the fifth inning. Henry then stole third base and scored on a throwing error.
