BATAVIA, N.Y. — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers won their fifth straight game, 8-1, over the Batavia Muckdogs on Friday night in a New York-Penn League game.

The Scrappers (15-7) broke a scoreless tie by scoring two runs in the fifth inning, then took advantage of three errors by the Muckdogs in the eighth inning to score five runs.

Designated hitter Lurvin Basabe hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the fith inning.

Greg Folgia added a pair of hits, including a run-scoring double in the eighth.

Ben Carlson had a two-run double for the Scrappers in the eighth inning.

Clayton Cook evened his record at 1-1 for Mahoning Valley. He pitched six shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out five.

Guido Fonseca pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit and the Muckdogs’ only run, for his first save of the season.

The Scrappers picked up nine hits in the game — every player had at least one except for leadoff hitter Jordan Henry, who reached twice on walks and scored a run.

Mahoning Valley scored all five of its runs in the eighth inning with two outs. Rafael Vera also had a RBI single in the rally.

Batavia’s only run came in the eighth when Ryan Jackson reached second on an error and later scored on a passed ball.
