Victorian Players get $20K grant for new roof

YOUNGSTOWN — The Victorian Players has received a $20,000 grant from the Youngstown Foundation to replace the roof of its theater.

The theater, a former church building at 702 Mahoning Ave., was built in the 1880s. The roof is in poor condition, but the theater did not have the funds to do the job, according to a press release from the Victorian.

The grant will fully fund the project, which will be done by Buckhorn Remodeling of New Middletown and will be completed by the end of summer.

The Victorian Players has been in the since the early 1990s, when it was founded by Jean McClure Kelty. Its mission remains to present high-quality, family-oriented theater focused on Victorian values or by authors who were born during the Victorian age. Local playwrights’ works are also presented, provided they adhere to the Victorian values.

The first show of the 2009-10 season, “The Elephant Man,” will open Sept. 11.
