Gallery to display works of two portrait artists

WARREN — Trumbull Art Gallery is presenting an exhibition of portraits by two regional artists: Charlene Galose and William Mullane.

The exhibition opens Sunday with an artists reception from 2 to 4 p.m. at TAG, 198 E. Market St., and runs through July 31.

Galose’s works pay tribute to prominent people in the region’s arts community. Her large and realistic portraits capture the personalities of people who influence, inspire and make possible the Mahoning Valley’s arts scene.

Galose is an art teacher at Boardman Glenwood Middle School. She received her bachelor’s degree in art education and a master’s in secondary education at Youngstown State University. “Portraits have always been my favorite art form,” said Galose. “Exploring the work of Chuck Close led me to the large up close format that has been evolving in my work for the past twelve years.”

Galose relies on photography to produce unusual and dramatic lighting and color distortions that she then uses as a basis for her painting.

In contrast to Galose’s portraiture, Mullane’s exhibition consists of small portraits, drawings of creatures and abstractions rendered electronically in a pocket computer-phone. These drawings, most often done while in meetings, are a 21st-century foray into doodling. Mullane’s small sketches are later manipulated in Photoshop, converted into computer applications and printed.

Mullane is the supervisor of school improvement for the Ashtabula County Educational Service Center and Jefferson Area Local Schools. He served as principal at Warren G. Harding High School and was a teacher and administrator in the Warren City Schools for 28 years. In addition to his work as an educator, Mullane has been involved in the region’s arts community for more than 30 years. He is also a board member of the Wean Foundation and the Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative.

Gallery hours are noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
