Penguins open at Pitt
PITTSBURGH — The YSU football team will open its season at Pitt on Sept. 5.
The game will have a 1 p.m. kickoff at Heinz Field.
The Panthers will be opening their 120th season.
Carpin, Curry, Leson named SAAC officers
YOUNGSTOWN — Junior diver/pole vaulter Amanda Carpin has been named the president of the YSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for 2009-10.
Junior thrower Danielle Curry will serve as vice president while senior tennis player Chris Leson is the secretary.
A two-sport athlete, Carpin finished ninth in the one-meter dive and 11th in the three-meter dive at the 2009 Horizon League Championships.
Curry won the discus and shot put at the outdoor league championships while placing third in the hammer throw.
Leson (Boardman High) has been a member of the men’s tennis team for the past three years. Last season he was a mainstay in the starting lineup competing at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

New Titans announced
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — There will be 38 new members of the Westminster College football team when the Titans take the field in the fall.
Among the incoming freshmen is Geno Pasquinelli, a 6-2, 195 receiver from Salem. He was first-team all-county and all-conference, a team captain and he earned three letters.
Also Kyle Allen (6-2, 160 runningback) from West Middlesex High, a third-team all-state.
Another new Titan will be linebacker Steve Cornich (5-9, 195) from South Range High who was honorable mention all-conference.
In addition, Howland High’s Rob Lupton (5-11, 210) will play defensive line there.
Circle of Friends charity golf outing
YOUNGSTOWN — Jim Graham, President of the UAW Local 1112, has been named the Circle of Friends Foundation’s Honorary Chairman for the Sports Celebrity Golf Outing scheduled July 13th at Squaw Creek Country Club.
Approximately 18 sports celebrities will be participating in the event, including Kelly Pavlik, WBC and WBO middleweight boxing champion.
Also scheduled are Phil Bourque, former Pittsburgh Penguins hockey player and now color commentator for Penguins radio broadcasts; Michael Zordich, former Philadelphia Eagles player and the current assistant coach for the Eagles; and Cleo Miller from the Cleveland Browns.
Inside Boxing show
YOUNGSTOWN — On the Inside Boxing radio show tonight on ESPN 1240-AM from 6-8 p.m., the guests will be World Extreme Cage fighting spokesman Dave Sholler and Donald Cerrone.
The WEC show will be held at the Covelli Center on Sept 2.

Track selections
NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced its women’s Div. III All-Academic Track & Field Team, and among the 274 student-athletes honored were Kylie Czulewicz and Jaquala Riggins of Thiel.
Czulewicz competed in javelin events. She earned a 3.33 GPA during the spring semester.
Riggins, a sophomore sprinter, earned a 3.41 GPA last semester while studying psychology. Riggins comes from Girard and is a graduate of The Rayen School.
She provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship meet by helping the Thiel 4x100-meter relay team to a 48.34-second time at the PAC meet.
Swimming honors
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. — The College Swimming Coaches Association of America named the Westminster College men’s and women’s swimming teams as CSCAA Scholar All-America teams for the 2009 Spring semester.
The 2009 Spring semester marked the 38th rating period out of 41 that the Westminster women’s team has been honored by the CSCAA as a Scholar All-America team. The Titan men’s team was also honored for the 18th time.
