Off-duty Ohio trooper accused of driving 147 mph

NEWARK, Ohio (AP) — An off-duty state trooper accused of driving a motorcycle more than 140 mph on an interstate highway has pleaded not guilty.

Jason Highsmith, 35, entered the plea today before Judge David Branstool of Licking County Municipal Court.

Authorities say Highsmith was clocked going 147 mph June 28 on Interstate 70 east of Columbus, where the speed limit is 65 mph.

Branstool told Highsmith he would suspend Highsmith’s license if he was convicted of the minor misdemeanor and if it occurred under reckless circumstances.

Highsmith is assigned to the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s motorcycle unit in Columbus.

He refused to comment to reporters after the hearing.
